Lackadaisical worry

Posted 5/19/2020 1:28pm by Shiloh Avery.

So many umbrellas!

Mallory asked me yesterday if I was worried about this extended wet weather period.  Well, of course I am, but that worry looks very lackadaisical.  Preparing for too much rain looks a lot different than preparing for a late freeze.  The predicted late freeze had us scrambling: driving 7+hours to procure more frost blankets, madly filling bags of gravel to hold down said frost blankets, starting fires to combat the inversion on the night of the freeze, etc.  Preparing for too much rain though, that’s all about long term foresight and investment.

So while we were scrambling to do even more to prevent crop losses from the late freeze, we’ve pretty much done all we can to mitigate too much rainfall over the last 10 years.  So my “worry” looks a lot less active than the previous weather “worry”.  No scrambling, no desperate drives across the state. Get some extra coffee for those dreary days, don the rubber boots and pray the sun will return to us sometime.  Preparing for too much water is quite literally what we’ve been doing the last 10 years.

Here's what we we're harvesting this week:

Baby lettuce salad mix: $3.50/5-oz compostable container

Arugula: $3.50/5-oz compostable container

We'll be at the Charlotte Regional Farmers Market in Building C 8am-1pm and at the Downtown Hickory Farmers Market 330 Main Ave NW  Wednesday 10am-2pm and Saturday 8am-1pm, and the Watauga County Farmers Market in Boone 8-noon.

Due to the high volume of emails, texts, and phone calls, facebook and Instagram messages, we are no longer able to accept orders through those avenues.  I can no longer keep up in a timely manner and so I end up missing some.  In order to facilitate better organization and flow on the farm so that fewer things fall through the cracks (and Shiloh maintains her sanity), we are asking that everyone wishing to place a pre-order go through our virtual farm stand: https://www.harvie.farm/farm-stand/tumbling-shoals-farm

Ordering for Saturday pick-ups happen from Sunday-Wednesday 7pm.  Ordering for Wednesday pick-ups happen from the Thursday-Sunday 11am.

If you’ve never ordered through our system before, check out this tutorial (it’s not like a square store): http://tumblingshoalsfarm.com/how-virtual-farm-stand-works

Thanks for your understanding and assistance in making things flow more smoothly for everyone while we navigate this crazy new world.
